What it does
The Information Act 2002 (NT) is the Northern Territory's unified information legislation. Unlike most Australian jurisdictions, the NT has consolidated freedom of information, privacy, and records management into a single Act, administered by a single independent officer.
Section 3 sets out four objects: providing the Territory community with access to government information; protecting the privacy of personal information held by public sector organisations; establishing an independent Information Commissioner to oversee the Act; and promoting efficient and accountable government through appropriate records and archives management.
Section 3(2) states the Act's balancing principle: it gives members of the Territory community a right of access to government information with limited exceptions and exemptions for the purpose of preventing a prejudicial effect on the public interest.
