What it does
The Land Act 1958 (Vic) is Victoria's principal statute governing the management, alienation, leasing, and licensing of Crown land. Enacted as an Act to consolidate the law relating to the sale and occupation of Crown lands, it is currently at Version 155 incorporating amendments to 22 October 2025.
The Act establishes the legal framework within which the Victorian Government can grant, lease, licence and manage Crown land. It covers the full lifecycle of Crown land dealings: from initial grants and reservations (Division 2, Part I), through perpetual leases (Division 4), conditional purchase leases (Division 5A), agricultural leases (Division 8), and various licence types, to the management of coastal land, watercourses, unused roads, and water frontages (Parts XII and XIII).
