What it does
The Survey and Mapping Infrastructure Act 2003 (Qld) is Queensland's principal legislation for the conduct of surveys, the maintenance of survey marks, the creation and management of State spatial datasets, and the legal definition of geographic and administrative boundaries throughout the State.
The Act's stated purposes (section 3) are to develop, maintain and improve the State survey and mapping infrastructure; to maintain and improve cadastral boundaries and the information the department holds about them; to coordinate and integrate survey and mapping information; to improve public access to survey and mapping information; and to define administrative areas and describe their boundaries. These purposes are achieved through standards and guidelines for survey quality, obligations and powers for surveyors, establishment and maintenance of recognised permanent survey marks, and the creation of four State datasets.
The Act is Queensland legislation. It commenced on a day fixed by proclamation and has been updated several times, most recently by the Land and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023 which inserted Part 10 on transitional provisions and revised requirements for survey standards and guidelines.
