This Act gives Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people a formal, elected voice in decisions that affect them, provides funding mechanisms to address historical disadvantage, and protects their cultural identity, land and water rights. It replaced the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) structure following its abolition in 2005.
