Commonwealth legislation
This ADR prescribes technical rules for vehicle lighting installation in Australia, incorporating UN Regulation No. 48 with specific Australian variations and allowing limited alternative approvals (e.g. FMVSS 108 for some heavy vehicles). It tells manufacturers, importers, trailer and specialty vehicle builders, aftermarket suppliers and approval/inspection authorities what lamps, locations, colours, visibility, wiring and testing are required. It matters because compliance determines legal approval and market entry, drives safety performance (aiming, tell‑tales, interlocks) and creates testing and documentation costs.
