Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets a hard cap on squid fishing effort for the Southern Squid Jig Fishery during the 2017 calendar year.

What it does:

Limits the total number of fishing machines allowed in the fishery to 550 standard squid jigging machines
Applies from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017
Automatically expires on 1 January 2018

Why this matters: This is a conservation tool called a 'total allowable effort' (TAE). Instead of limiting the weight of squid caught, it restricts the number of machines used to catch them. This prevents fishers from simply deploying more or bigger equipment to circumvent catch limits, helping ensure squid stocks remain sustainable. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority sets this cap annually to balance commercial fishing opportunities with environmental protection.
