Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets the maximum amount of Southern Bluefin Tuna that Australian commercial fishers could catch during the 2005-06 fishing season.

What it does It fixes Australia's national catch limit (known as a Total Allowable Catch) at 5,265 tonnes (5,265,000 kilograms) for the season running from 1 December 2005 to 30 November 2006.

Who it affects Commercial fishers holding quota rights in the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery. Once the combined catch of all Australian fishers hits this cap, the season closes for this species.

Why it matters This hard cap ensures Australia meets its international conservation obligations and prevents overfishing of this vulnerable migratory species. It operates as a statutory 'stop button' for the entire fishery once the limit is reached.
