Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This legal instrument sets the maximum amount of two fish species that can be caught in a specific Australian fishery during 2006.

The catches allowed:

Boarfish: 200 tonnes (whole weight)
Orange roughy: 500 tonnes (whole weight)

Who and where: These limits apply to fishing boats using trawl nets in the East Coast Deepwater Trawl Sector (part of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery) during the 2006 calendar year.

Why it matters: These are "non-quota" species, meaning the total catch is capped across the entire fishery rather than being divided up as individual fishing rights (quotas). This prevents overfishing of these deepwater species while allowing the fishery to operate.
