Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this law does:

This Act gives federal money to State governments specifically to help farmers who grow mandarins (a type of citrus fruit).

Key details:

The money: The Commonwealth pays set amounts to five States — New South Wales gets the largest share (£8,515), while Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia receive smaller amounts (£126–£935).
The condition: States only get this money if they promise to spend it on benefits or assistance for mandarin growers — for example, drought relief, debt assistance, or subsidies during hard times.
Where the money comes from: The funds are drawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the government's main bank account).

Why it matters:

During the 1930s Depression, many primary producers faced severe hardship. This law represents a targeted federal bailout for a specific agricultural sector, using the States as distribution channels to get aid directly to struggling mandarin farmers.
