Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This determination sets the official dates for the "fishing year" in the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery — the period when commercial fishing for toothfish is permitted around Macquarie Island.

Key details:

First fishing year: 15 April 2012 to 30 April 2013 (a slightly longer initial period to align the dates)
Every year after: 1 May to 30 April of the following year (a standard 12-month cycle)

Who it affects: Commercial fishers licensed to catch toothfish in this fishery, who must operate within these specific dates.

Why it matters: Fishing seasons need clear start and end dates so fishers know when they can legally operate, and so fish stocks can be managed sustainably. This instrument creates that calendar under the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery Management Plan 2006.
