173 Grant or renewal of registration as foreign lawyer
(1) The relevant council must consider an application that has been made
for the grant or renewal of registration as a foreign lawyer and may—
(a) grant or refuse to grant the registration; or
(b) renew or refuse to renew the registration.
Note When granting or renewing registration as a foreign lawyer, the relevant
council may impose conditions on the registration under s 193
(Conditions imposed on local registration by relevant council).
(2) If the relevant council grants or renews registration, the relevant
council must give the applicant a registration certificate or a notice of
renewal.
(3) A notice of renewal may be in the form of a new registration
certificate or any other form the relevant council considers
(4) The relevant council must give the applicant an information notice if
the relevant council—
(a) refuses to grant or renew registration; or

(b) imposes a condition on the registration and the applicant does
not agree to the condition.
(5) The relevant council is taken to have refused to grant or renew
registration if registration has not been granted at the end of 28 days
after the day the application for grant or renewal is made.
