Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act authorises the federal government to survey a route for a railway connecting Kalgoorlie in Western Australia with Port Augusta in South Australia — the first step toward what became the Trans-Australian Railway.

Key points:

Conditional start: The survey can only begin after the Parliament of South Australia formally consents.
Funding limit: The government can spend up to £20,000 from the national budget (the Consolidated Revenue Fund) on the survey.
Limited scope: This Act only covers the surveying (mapping and planning) of the route, not the actual construction of the railway.

Why it matters: Before building the railway that finally linked Western Australia to the eastern states in 1917, the government needed to know exactly where the tracks would go and what terrain engineers would face. This law provided the legal authority and cash to send surveyors across the Nullarbor Plain to figure that out.
