This Act has been repealed and is no longer in force. It is retained for historical reference.
What this does: This Direction bans fishing in the waters immediately surrounding Heard Island and McDonald Islands, two remote Australian territories in the Southern Ocean.
The closure zone: Fishing is prohibited within a boundary that sits 13 nautical miles from the islands. This covers:
Who it affects: Anyone holding a fishing permit (concession) for the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Fishery — primarily commercial operators — and anyone acting on their behalf.
Why it matters: The closure protects the fragile marine environment around these sub-Antarctic islands by keeping fishing vessels at a safe distance from the coast. It replaced an earlier closure direction and operates under the Fisheries Management Act 1991.
