This covers:\n- The **territorial sea** (the 12-nautical-mile strip of water closest to shore), plus  \n- An additional **1-nautical-mile buffer** just outside that boundary.\n\n**Who it affects:** Anyone holding a fishing permit (concession) for the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Fishery — primarily commercial operators — and anyone acting on their behalf.\n\n**Why it matters:** The closure protects the fragile marine environment around these sub-Antarctic islands by keeping fishing vessels at a safe distance from the coast. It replaced an earlier closure direction and operates under the *Fisheries Management Act 1991*."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/heard-island-and-mcdonald-islands-fishery-closures-direction-no-2-2014","history":"/api/acts/heard-island-and-mcdonald-islands-fishery-closures-direction-no-2-2014/history","analysis":"/api/acts/heard-island-and-mcdonald-islands-fishery-closures-direction-no-2-2014/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/heard-island-and-mcdonald-islands-fishery-closures-direction-no-2-2014/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/heard-island-and-mcdonald-islands-fishery-closures-direction-no-2-2014/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/heard-island-and-mcdonald-islands-fishery-closures-direction-no-2-2014/documents"}}
