Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This short technical rule sets a conversion factor for tuna fishers. What it does: It establishes that for the 2015–16 fishing season, each statutory fishing right (a tradable permit allowing fishers to catch Southern Bluefin Tuna) equals 1.0639653 kilograms of actual live fish weight. Why it matters: The Australian Fisheries Management Authority uses this number to translate fishing rights into actual catch tonnage. Fishers need this value to calculate exactly how much tuna they are legally allowed to catch during the season. When it applies: The rule covers the single season from 1 December 2015 to 30 November 2016, after which it automatically expires. Key concept: A "statutory fishing right" is essentially a licence that gives the holder a share of the total allowable catch for this highly regulated fishery.
