Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets the fishing effort limits (how much fishing is allowed) for the Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery for a specific 16-month season.

What it does:

It caps the total fishing activity for the season starting 1 November 2009 and ending 28 February 2011.
Longline sector: Maximum of 12 million effort units (effort units measure fishing activity, such as the number of hooks set or days spent fishing).
Minor line sector: Maximum of 2,464 effort units.

Why it matters: These limits are designed to prevent overfishing of tuna and billfish species off Australia's east coast. By capping the total effort, the government ensures fish stocks remain sustainable and the fishery doesn't exceed safe biological limits. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority uses these caps to allocate fishing rights to commercial operators.
