Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Act legalizes customs duty changes that were already put into effect due to currency exchange rate fluctuations.

What it does: It validates adjustments to import taxes (customs duties) announced in August 1934 proposals, ensuring they are lawful even though they were applied before this Act formally passed. These adjustments account for changes in exchange rates between the Australian pound and other currencies.

Who it affects: Importers and businesses who paid customs duties between August 1934 and February 1935.

Why it matters: Without this law, duties collected during this interim period could be challenged as illegal. The Act protects government revenue by backdating legal authority for these specific exchange-rate-related tax variations, covering actions taken even if the House of Representatives was dissolved during this period.
