Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

These regulations nominate four specific employee representative groups that have a formal legal role when the Australian Government manages redeployment and retirement of public servants.

What it does: The regulations 'prescribe' (officially recognize) four peak union and professional bodies for the purposes of section 7 of the Commonwealth Employees (Redeployment and Retirement) Act 1979. This prescription gives these organizations standing—typically consultation rights or notification requirements—when decisions are made about staffing changes, redundancies, or retirement arrangements affecting Commonwealth employees.

The prescribed organizations are:

Council of Australian Government Employee Organisations (represents public sector workers)
Australian Council of Trade Unions (peak union body)
Australian Council of Salaried and Professional Associations (represents white-collar and professional employees)
Council of Professional Associations (represents professional groups)

Why it matters: This ensures that employee representatives have a mandated legal voice in workforce restructuring processes, protecting staff interests when government departments undergo organizational change.
