Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This instrument creates a temporary exemption from runway width safety rules for specific types of flying operations.

What it does Normally, pilots must only use runways that meet minimum width requirements for their specific aircraft type (under the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988). This exemption allows pilots to legally take off from or land on runways that are narrower than those standard requirements.

Who it affects The exemption applies only to pilots in command of aircraft conducting:

Aerial work — commercial operations such as surveying, aerial photography, or agricultural spraying
Private operations — non-commercial personal flights

Who it does NOT affect The exemption does not apply to regular public transport (airline) operations or charter flights. Those operators must still comply with the normal runway width standards.

Key feature This was a time-limited exemption (not permanent) with a built-in expiry date.
