What this does: This sets the final date for TV broadcasters in three specific parts of regional Victoria—Eastern Victoria, Regional Victoria, and Western Victoria—to broadcast in both analog and digital formats simultaneously.
Why it matters: The "simulcast period" is the timeframe when TV stations broadcast the same programs in both old (analog) and new (digital) formats to help viewers transition to digital TV. This determination fixes the end of that period as 5 May 2011 for these regions. After this deadline, analog broadcasts would cease, meaning viewers who hadn't upgraded to digital equipment would have lost their TV signal.
