Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument sets the fishing quotas (called "total allowable catches") for the Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery for the 2017 calendar year.

What it does: It legally limits how many scallops can be harvested in this specific fishing area to prevent overfishing and maintain sustainable fish stocks.

Catch limits for 2017:

Commercial Scallop (Pecten fumatus): 3,000 tonnes (whole weight)
Doughboy Scallop (Chlamys asperrimus): 100 tonnes (whole weight)

Who it affects: Commercial fishers licensed to operate in the Bass Strait Central Zone, and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) which oversees the fishery.

Why it matters: These caps ensure scallop populations remain viable. Once fishers collectively catch these amounts, fishing for these species must stop for the year. This protects the marine environment and the long-term economic viability of the industry. The instrument automatically expired on 31 December 2017.
