What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) addressed to operators and maintainers of certain Eurocopter AS 332 (Super Puma) series helicopters. Mechanically, it mandates a specific inspection and conditional corrective work on the hinged door upper and lower catches and the associated “door open” micro-switches. The AD directs that operators perform a visual inspection of the positioning of the rear and front lower door catches and the rear and front upper door catches in accordance with paragraph 2.B.2 of Eurocopter AS 332 ASB 52.00.38 (original issue) or a later EASA-approved revision (Requirement). Where any catch is improperly installed the AD requires removal and reinstallation of the affected catch in accordance with paragraphs 2.B.3 and 2.B.4 of the ASB, followed by adjustment of the micro-switches and a functional check as set out in paragraph 2.B.5. If all catches are properly installed the directive nonetheless requires adjustment of the micro-switches and performance of the functional check per paragraph 2.B.5 before further flight (Requirement).
The AD sets an outer compliance limit: the inspection and any required corrective actions must be completed within 220 flight hours or six months after 12 March 2009, whichever occurs first (Compliance). The AD is expressly stated to become effective on 12 March 2009 (Compliance). The instrument identifies its applicability by model and delivery date: it applies to AS 332 C, C1, L, L1 and L2 helicopters, all serial numbers, but only if the helicopter is equipped with hinge doors and was delivered before 1 August 2007 (Applicability). The AD also notes that EASA AD 2009-0015 is relevant (Note). The document is signed by a CASA delegate, David Punshon, and dated 28 January 2009.
In short, the AD converts the safety concern, the risk that incorrectly positioned door catches can cause an in-flight hinge-door opening, into a mandatory, time-limited compliance programme tying inspection, possible removal/reinstallation, micro-switch adjustment and functional testing to the Eurocopter ASB procedures cited in the Requirement and Compliance sections.
