What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) compels operators of certain Eurocopter AS 332 Super Puma helicopters to perform a sequence of inspections for cracking in the fuselage around frame 5295, specifically in the outer skin and the butt strap where the main gearbox (MGB) sliding cowling rails attach. The AD was issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 22 February 2008 and took effect on 25 February 2008. It responds to an in-service discovery: a crack was found in frame 5295 on an AS 332 L helicopter during a daily check, after cracks had already appeared in the outer skin and butt strap. The affected aircraft had the original riveted frame design, before the embodiment of modification MOD 0722907.
The AD proceeds in three sequential requirements. First, it mandates a visual crack check of the outer skin and butt strap in the rail attachment areas on frame 5295, carried out in accordance with Eurocopter Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. 05.00.76 (original issue or any later EASA approved revision). The compliance trigger depends on total flight hours. Helicopters that have logged 8,800 or more flight hours as of 25 February 2008 must be inspected within 10 flight hours and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 10 hours if no crack is found. Helicopters with fewer than 8,800 hours must be inspected upon reaching 8,810 flight hours, and then at the same 10-hour intervals. Second, if a crack is found in the outer skin or butt strap, the operator must before further flight inspect frame 5295 itself for cracks. If that frame inspection reveals no cracking, the operator may continue flying after embodying an approved skin repair, but must repeat the frame 5295 inspection every 50 flight hours until the repair is approved and embodied. After the approved skin repair is completed, the operator resumes the 10-hour outer skin inspection cycle. If the frame itself is cracked, the requirement is unequivocal: suspend further flights immediately and contact Eurocopter Customer Service Technical Support. Third, irrespective of any findings, the AD requires accomplishment of paragraph 2.B.3 of the same ASB, corresponding to modification MOD 07.26478R2, which consists of cutting out the MGB sliding cowling rails locally. That modification must be done within 300 flight hours or 6 months after 25 February 2008 (whichever comes first) for helicopters already at or above 8,800 flight hours, or within 300 flight hours or 6 months after reaching 8,800 flight hours for those below that threshold.
