What it does
Mechanically, this Airworthiness Directive (AD/S‑PUMA/69) requires operators of specified Eurocopter AS 332 (Super Puma) variant helicopters to carry out functional inspections of the fuel shut‑off controls and to inspect and greaselubricate (recondition) the tangential gearboxes that actuate those controls. The AD directs compliance with procedures set out in Eurocopter AS 332 Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. 76.00.04, Para 2.B.1 for the functional check and Para 2.B.2 for the tangential gearbox reconditioning/grease‑lubrication, referencing the ASB original issue dated 21 March 2007 or later EASA‑approved revisions (Requirement 1; Requirement 4; Applicability).
The AD imposes phased timing and recurring inspection intervals that differ by the helicopter’s calendar age as at the effective date. For helicopters aged four years or older on the effective date, the initial action must be completed within 15 flight hours after the AD becomes effective, with further inspections at intervals not to exceed 50 flight hours, and the gearbox reconditioning/grease‑lubrication to be completed within six months of the first inspection (Compliance). For helicopters less than four years old on the effective date, the initial check must be completed by the time the helicopter reaches four years of age, thereafter at intervals not to exceed 50 flight hours, and the gearbox reconditioning/grease‑lubrication must be completed by the helicopter’s 4.5‑year calendar life (Compliance).
The AD also creates a compliance logic: if no “hard point” (binding/jamming condition) is found in the fuel shut‑off controls on inspection, the operator must repeat the functional inspection at the prescribed intervals until the tangential gearbox reconditioning (Requirement 4) has been carried out; if a hard point is found in any fuel shut‑off control, Requirement 4 (grease‑lubricate/recondition the tangential gearboxes) must be complied with immediately (Requirement 2; Requirement 3; Note 1). The AD became effective on 30 March 2007 and is issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Charles Lenarcic, 29 March 2007).
