What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) directed at a discrete component of the Sikorsky S‑92A helicopter fleet. It requires two mandatory actions, to be completed before further flight of any affected helicopter: first, replacement of any main gearbox (MGB) upper main housing assembly (housing assembly) with 2,700 or more hours time‑in‑service (TIS) with an airworthy MGB housing that has less than 2,700 hours TIS; second, revision of the Airworthiness Limitations section (ALS) of the maintenance manual to establish a new retirement life for the MGB housing assembly of 2,700 hours TIS (Requirement; Compliance). The AD identifies the affected part by part number: 92351‑15110‑042 (Applicability).
The AD becomes effective on 18 December 2006 and was signed by James Coyne as Delegate of CASA on 13 December 2006 (Compliance; signature and dates noted). The Background paragraph states the immediate technical trigger: testing showed premature fatigue failure in the housing assembly caused by a manufacturing process that created an oxide skin defect in the housing; the AD is intended to prevent fatigue failure of the MGB housing and the consequential loss of lube oil, loss of main and tail rotor drive, and subsequent loss of control of the helicopter (Background). The instrument also notes the related FAA action, citing FAA AD 2006‑15‑19 Amdt 39‑14700 dated 26 July 2006 (Note).
Mechanically, the document does not specify repair procedures, allowable extensions, or exemptions. It prescribes removal and replacement of an identified part exceeding the stated TIS threshold and an administrative change to the maintenance manual ALS. Compliance is mandatory before further flight; the AD specifies no grace period (Compliance; Requirement). The AD therefore functions as a mandatory grounding condition for any S‑92A on which the specific housing assembly (part number 92351‑15110‑042) has 2,700 or more hours TIS until the housing is replaced and the ALS updated.
