Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

Owners/operators of certain Robin aircraft listed in Robin Aviation Service Bulletin No. 161 Rev 1 must have a mechanic inspect the engine air intake box, carburettor heat deflector, and the laminated ducting downstream of the air filter for flaking paint that could be ingested and cause engine failure. The first check is required by 31 Dec 1999 (or within 5 flight hours thereafter) and must be repeated every 110 flight hours. This amendment expands the original rule to include the connecting ductwork.

AD/ROBIN/30

Amdt 1

Engine Air Intake Inspection 1/2000

Applicability: Robin aircraft as detailed by model in Robin Aviation Service Bulletin No. 161 Revision 1.

Requirement: 1. As applicable by aircraft model, inspect the interior of the air intake box and carburettor heat deflector plate in accordance with the requirements of Process 1 of Robin Aviation Service Bulletin No. 161 Rev. 1.

As applicable by aircraft model, inspect the interior of the air intake laminated air ducting, including the area located downstream of the intake air filter, in accordance with the requirements of Process 2 of Robin Aviation Service Bulletin No. 161 Rev. 1.

Note: DGAC Airworthiness Directives 1999-053(A) and 1999-470(A) refer.

Compliance: Effective 31 December 1999: Unless previously accomplished; within 5 hours time in service and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 110 hours time in service.

This Amendment becomes effective on 31 December 1999.

Background: This directive was originally issued to require an inspection of the interior of the engine air intake box for evidence of paint detaching. Paint detaching from the interior of the air intake box and inlet duct may result in a loss of engine power or engine stoppage. This amendment reflects the manufacturer’s revision to the requirement document. The revision, in part, adds a requirement to inspect the ducting between the air filter and the air intake box.
