What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/PC-12/45) requires immediate inspection and, if necessary, replacement of wiring associated with the co‑pilot’s windshield de‑ice system on a defined subset of Pilatus PC‑12 series aeroplanes. The directive applies to Model PC‑12 and PC‑12/45 aeroplanes, Manufacturer Serial Numbers (MSN) 322 through MSN 400 inclusive (see Applicability). It mandates three discrete actions: (1) inspect for signs of heat damage to wires, splices and related link wires in the area of terminal block TB152 in accordance with paragraph 3 of Pilatus Service Bulletin (SB) 30‑009; (2) check that the installed wires and related link wires are the correct size (American Wire Gauge, AWG) as specified in paragraph 3.B. of SB 30‑009 and in Wiring Manual (WM) 30‑40‑00 and 30‑40‑10; and (3) if heat damage or incorrect wiring is found, replace the affected wiring in accordance with SB 30‑009 (see Requirement items 1-3).
The AD sets short compliance windows. Requirements 1 and 2 must be completed within the next 10 hours time‑in‑service but no later than three calendar months after the AD’s effective date (the AD becomes effective on 18 February 2005). Requirement 3, that is the replacement of heat‑damaged or incorrectly sized wiring, must be completed before further flight. The AD notes that the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation (FOCA) AD HB‑2005‑079 is relevant. The AD records the operational hazard prompting the directive: an incident in which overheating of the return wire to the windshield heating system caused a co‑pilot’s windshield de‑ice system failure, linked to incorrect AWG being installed relative to the wiring diagrams, creating a risk of heat damage, electrical arcing or possible fire in the overhead panel of the flight‑compartment (Background).
Mechanically, the AD converts the SB and Wiring Manual specifications from recommended maintenance material into mandatory corrective action for the identified fleet segment by imposing specified inspection and replacement obligations and short time limits for completion. The AD does not itself reproduce the technical inspection or replacement procedures; it normatively refers operators to the indicated service bulletin and wiring manuals for the detailed work instructions.
