What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/ERJ-190/2, dated 5/2008 TX, effective 20 March 2008) imposes two mandatory, sequential corrective measures for Embraer ERJ-190 series aeroplanes that do not already have certain engine Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) software installed. Mechanically, it first requires an immediate operational limitation to be inserted into the approved Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM). The AFM amendment is an operational mitigator: crews must be warned, by the AFM, not to move the throttle back to forward thrust immediately after using the thrust reverser unless the REV icon on the EICAS is amber or green. The exact wording to be added is provided in the Directive and may be accomplished by inserting a copy of the Directive into the AFM (Requirement 1).
Mechanically, the second requirement is a modification to aircraft equipment/software: install engine FADEC software version 5.10 or 5.20, as applicable, or a higher version. The installation must be done in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin (SB) 190-73-0005 dated 9 November 2006, or SB 190-73-0009 dated 21 December 2007, or later revisions approved by the Brazilian Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC) (Requirement 2). The AD makes the AFM change mandatory within seven days of the Directive’s effective date and mandates the software installation within the next 1,200 hours time-in-service (TIS) after the effective date (Compliance).
The Directive states the safety rationale: ANAC advised that during an actual landing operation it was found that the thrust reverser re-stow may not occur as desired if the throttle lever is moved out of the reverse range within less than 0.2 seconds after the thrust reverser has been commanded; should a crew then attempt a take-off, the aeroplane may become airborne with a partially deployed thrust reverser, which is an unsafe condition affecting flight safety (Background). The Directive therefore prescribes the AFM amendment as an immediate mitigation and the FADEC software upgrade as the corrective action.
