What it does
AD/ERJ-170/1 Amdt 3 is an airworthiness directive issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under the Civil Aviation Act 1988 (Cth) and the Civil Aviation Regulations or Civil Aviation Safety Regulations. It mandates a series of inspections, modifications, and maintenance actions on the forward and aft cargo doors of Embraer ERJ-170 series aeroplanes. The directive arose after the Brazilian civil aviation authority (ANAC) received several reports of aircraft being dispatched and flown with a cargo door unlocked. The core mechanical change is to eliminate the possibility that a cargo door is not fully latched and locked before flight, and to ensure that any indication of an unlocked door is reliable and acted upon. The directive imposes a combination of immediate and recurring tasks: a visual inspection for door flushness before each departure (Requirement 1, with an option to rely on approved Minimum Equipment List procedures), followed by detailed inspections and modifications within defined flight cycles or hours. The most significant structural change is the requirement to relocate the cargo door closed indication sensor, modify the cargo door lock handle mechanism, and replace roller fittings with updated part numbers (Requirement 4). This modification, when combined with the revision of the Aircraft Maintenance Plan (Requirement 5), constitutes terminating action to the repetitive inspection interval for the roller fittings (Requirement 3). Until those modifications are done, operators must repeat a detailed visual inspection of the lateral roller fitting on both cargo door frames at intervals not exceeding 150 flight cycles. The directive also requires removal of cover plates and rework of aft edge liner assemblies, whether or not interference is found, which increases labour and parts costs for every affected aircraft. The effective date is 31 July 2008, but compliance timeframes are backdated to events from 23 March 2007, creating retrospective obligations for operators who had not already complied with earlier versions.
