What it does
Mechanically, this instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) that orders inspections, modifications and repairs on Eurocopter EC135 and EC635 series helicopters, serial numbers 0005 through 0654. The directive requires: (1) inspection of the left hand (LH) and right hand (RH) cable channel wire harnesses in accordance with Eurocopter Deutschland Service Bulletin ASB EC135-53A-017 dated 18 January 2007; (2) modification of the LH and RH side channel cover attachments in accordance with the same ASB; (3) installation of chafing protection for the wire harnesses in those cable channels pursuant to the ASB; (4) modification of Co-pilot Collective Lever cover attachments if that item is installed, again per the ASB; and (5) if inspection (Requirement 1) reveals damaged wire harnesses, to contact Eurocopter Deutschland customer service or the Australian agent, Australian Aerospace Ltd customer service, for advice on an appropriate repair scheme and to comply with that advice. These actions are set out under the table entries labelled "Requirement" and "Applicability" in the AD.
The compliance timing is explicit. For Requirements 1 to 4 inclusive the work must be done "Within the next 25 hours time in service after the effective date of this directive, but not later than 28 February 2007." Requirement 5 must be satisfied "Before further flight after the Requirement 1 inspection is accomplished." The AD became effective on 24 January 2007 and references EASA AD 2007-0021-E.
The official rationale stated in the AD is investigative: EASA received advice that a burning odour in flight resulted from an electrical short circuit in the LH cable channel caused by a damaged wire harness, and that the harness was damaged by the side channel cover attachment hardware. The AD therefore orders inspection and, if necessary, repair plus modifications to prevent further incidents of wire harness damage, chafing and short circuits.
