What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD/DA42/7, dated 10/2008) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, effective 25 September 2008. It requires owners/operators of certain Diamond DA42 aeroplanes fitted with Thielert TAE 125-01 engines to inspect, correct and ultimately replace the right hand rear engine support bracket mounting bolts. The AD directs compliance with the manufacturer’s Mandatory Service Bulletin DAIMSB-42-058 (original issue dated 21 May 2008, or later EASA approved revision) and its associated Work Instruction WI‑MSB‑42‑058 (dated 12 March 2008, or later EASA approved revision). The operational mechanics it imposes are:
- An initial and repetitive inspection and correction of the fastening torque of the right hand rear engine support bracket mounting bolts, performed "in accordance with DAIMSB‑42‑058 original issue, or later EASA approved revision, and the associated Work Instruction WI‑MSB‑42‑058 dated 12 March 2008, or later EASA approved revision" (Requirement 1 in the AD text).
- Mandatory replacement of all right hand rear engine support bracket mounting bolts with wire‑secured bolts, part number D60‑9071‑26‑01, also "in accordance with DAIMSB‑42‑058 ... and WI‑MSB‑42‑058" (Requirement 2 in the AD text).
- A transition rule: after installation of the wire‑secured bolts (D60‑9071‑26‑01) the repetitive torque inspections under Requirement 1 are no longer required.
- A prohibition on installing replacement bolts other than the specified wire‑secured part number to the right hand rear engine support bracket after 30 November 2009.
Timing is prescribed. The AD requires the first inspection "within 100 flight hours after 25 September 2008, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 100 flight hours; until accomplishment of Requirement 2.2" and mandates that replacement (Requirement 2) be completed "no later than 30 April 2009" (Compliance). The AD explicitly references EASA AD 2008‑0139 (Note) and states its effective date. The background statement in the AD records the safety rationale: powder coating degradation on the right hand rear engine support bracket has reduced bolt torque and in some cases allowed bolts to fully unscrew and fall into the engine cowling, creating a risk of further loosening and possible damage to the engine or accessories (Background).
