What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) directs mandatory inspections and, where necessary, repair or replacement work on integrated drive generator (IDG) cables and on the clearances between the 10th stage bleed air check valve and the fuel manifold pigtails on specified Bombardier (Canadair) CL-600 series aeroplanes (both CL-600-2B19 Regional Jet and CL-600-2B16 Challenger). The AD sets the applicable serial number ranges, prescribes the technical service documents to be followed for inspections and corrective action, requires reporting of inspection results to Bombardier, and fixes compliance windows: the principal inspection tasks must be done within 50 hours time in service (TIS) of the AD becoming effective, and reports must be submitted within 10 days after the inspection and any corrective action (see Applicability; Requirement Parts A and B; Compliance). The AD declares that any corrective action required as a result of the inspections "must be accomplished before further flight" (Compliance). The AD becomes effective on 14 August 2002 and is signed by the CASA delegate on 7 August 2002; it was notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 14 August 2002 (Effective date; signature and Gazette notice).
Mechanically, the AD converts specified manufacturer/engine maintenance documents (Canadair/Bombardier Alert Service Bulletins and Alert Wires; GE CF34 service or engine manuals and chapters) into mandatory work-steps for Australian-registered aircraft within the listed serial number ranges (Requirement Parts A and B). It also cross-references Transport Canada AD CF-99-09R1 (Note). The stated purpose in the AD background is to address reports of chafing of IDG cable insulation (including one instance down to bare wire with evidence of a brief flash fire) and two reports of chafing damage to the main engine right fuel manifold on Regional Jet aircraft; the AD's actions are described as intended to "ensure the integrity of the IDG cables and fuel manifolds" (Background).
