What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) titled AD/CL-600/35 Amdt 2, directed at Bombardier (Canadair) CL-600 (Challenger) Series aeroplanes, and it imposes a mandatory replacement requirement for specified main landing gear main fittings. The Requirement field states, in full, that operators must "Replace the affected main landing gear main fittings with new main fittings, part number 601R85001-83 and 601R85001-84 (MDI part number 17064-107 and 17064-108; in accordance with Bombardier Service Bulletin (SB) 601R-32-093 original issue, SB 601R85001 Revision A, or SB 601R85001 Revision B, or later Transport Canada approved revision." The AD gives a compliance deadline: unless already accomplished, the replacement must be done before 30 September 2007, and the Amendment becomes effective on 30 August 2007. The Applicability field limits the directive to Model CL-600-2B19 aircraft equipped with main landing gear fittings part numbers 601R85001-3 and 601R85001-4 (MDI part numbers 17064-101, -102, -103, and -104).
Mechanically, the AD mandates a physical parts exchange: remove the fittings with the older part numbers and install the two listed new part numbers, following one of the specified Bombardier Service Bulletins or a later Transport Canada-approved revision of those bulletins. The AD also states that "Incorporation of the new main fittings terminates the need to comply with Parts I, II, III, IV, and V of AD CF-1999-32R3; and with Parts I, II, and III of associated AD CF-2004-18R1." In short, completing the mandated replacement extinguishes several earlier continuing requirements under those prior ADs.
The Background field explains why the replacement is required. It records three reported cases of premature failure of the main landing gear main fitting, identifying the failure mode as a circumferential crack at the radius between the fitting cylinder area and the upper attachment lug for the shock strut. The Background summarises earlier remedial steps: Amendment 1 added servicing of the shock struts, repetitive inspection of shock strut nitrogen pressure and visible chrome dimensions, and allowed the eddy current inspection interval to be increased under certain conditions. Amendment 2, the current text, responds to a revision of the related Transport Canada AD which now requires replacement of the affected fittings. The AD is signed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority delegate, David Villiers, and records the original AD effective date as 24 February 2000, with Amendment 2 dated 11 July 2007 and effective 30 August 2007.
