This airworthiness directive requires operators of specified Bombardier CL-600 Challenger serials fitted with Sundstrand ADG uplocks (PN 721863/721863A/721863B) to inspect the ADG uplock pin, install a modified uplock (PN 721863C or M721863) and perform a rigging check per Canadair service bulletins. Inspections are due within 150 flight hours of 10 November 1994 and installations by 10 November 1995; operators pay for parts, labour and downtime while CASA enforces the AD to correct reported manual-deployment failures.

Bombardier (Canadair) CL-600 (Challenger) Series Aeroplanes

AD/CL-600/28 Sunstrand Air Driven Generator 12/94

Applicability: Canadair Challenger aircraft with the following serial numbers, equipped with Sundstrand Air Driven Generator (ADG) uplock assemblies part number 721863, 721863A or 721863B:

CL-600-1A11 serial numbers 1004 to 1085 inclusive,

CL-600-2A12 serial numbers 3001 to 3066 inclusive, and CL-600-2B16 serial numbers 5001 to 5150 inclusive.

Requirement: 1. Check the integrity of the ADG uplock internal pin in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions Section 2.B of Canadair Service Bulletin 600-0638 (for CL-600-1A11 aircraft) or Service Bulletin 601-0430 (for CL-600-2A12 and CL-600-2B16 aircraft) both dated 25 April 1994. (This check is not required if a modified ADG uplock assembly is installed within 150 flight hours from 10 November 1994 to satisfy Requirement 2 of this Directive).

2. Install a modified ADG uplock assembly, part number 721863C (all models) or M721863 (for CL-600-1A11 aircraft only) in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions Section 2.A of Canadair Service Bulletin 600-0638 (for CL-600-1A11 aircraft) or Service Bulletin 601-0430 (for CL-600-2A12 and CL-600-2B16 aircraft) both dated 25 April 1994.

3. Perform a rigging check in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions Section 2.C of Canadair Service Bulletin 600-0638 (for CL-600-1A11 aircraft) or Service Bulletin 601-0430 (for CL-600-2A12 and CL-600-2B16 aircraft) both dated 25 April 1994.

Note: Transport Canada Aviation AD CF-94-13 dated 1 September 1994 refers.

Compliance: 1. Within 150 flight hours from 10 November 1994.

2. Prior to 10 November 1995.

3. Immediately following completion of the actions specified by either Requirement 1 or 2.

Background: Operators have reported six incidents where the ADG has not deployed upon operation of the manual release system. Inspection of the manual release system found that a broken shaft pin in the ADG uplock assembly had prevented the uplock mechanism from releasing the ADG when the manual system was operated.

Compliance with this Directive will detect and correct these problems in the ADG manual deployment system.
