What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), designated AD/CIRRUS/6 and numbered 13/2006, is a mandatory regulatory instrument issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 25 October 2006, effective from 21 December 2006. It imposes specific inspection, replacement, modification and documentation requirements on certain Cirrus Design Corporation Model SR20 and SR22 aeroplanes. The AD responds to multiple reports of brake fires and two incidents in which aeroplanes lost directional control. The stated objective is to detect, correct and prevent overheating damage to the brake caliper piston O-ring seals, which can cause leakage of brake hydraulic fluid and, in turn, loss of braking or brake fire.
Mechanically, the AD divides the affected fleet into four groups based on model and serial number range. For Group 1 (SR20, S/N 1005 through 1600) and Group 2 (SR22, S/N 0002 through 1739), the AD requires a records check at the next annual or 100 hour inspection to determine whether the brake caliper piston O-ring seals were replaced at the last such inspection. If no record exists, the operator must, before further flight, either replace the O-ring seals with new ones or replace the entire brake calipers with new units in accordance with Cirrus Design Corporation Service Bulletin SB 2X-32-13R1 dated 16 May 2006 (or a later FAA approved revision). For Group 3 (SR20, S/N 1005 through 1592) and Group 4 (SR22, S/N 0002 through 1727), the AD mandates physical modifications to the main landing gear (MLG) wheel fairings: adding temperature indicator sticker inspection holes and trimming the fairings to prevent them from holding fluids. It also requires installation of a temperature indicator sticker on the brake calipers. The AD further prohibits installing any MLG fairing without these modifications and prohibits replacing any brake caliper without also installing the temperature indicator sticker. These modifications must follow Cirrus Design Corporation Service Bulletin SB 2X-32-14R1 dated 17 February 2006 (or a later FAA approved revision). Finally, for all aeroplanes (Groups 1 through 4), the AD requires inserting the revised Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH) part number specified in Table 1 of the AD. The compliance times vary: the records check for Groups 1 and 2 must be done within 50 hours time in service (TIS) after the effective date; any resulting remedial action for Groups 1 and 2 must be taken before further flight; the Group 3 and 4 fairing modifications and sticker installation must be done within 50 hours TIS; and the POH revision must be completed within 50 hours TIS. Several requirements carry the qualification “unless already done”, meaning that if the action was performed before the AD’s effective date, it does not need to be repeated provided it is recorded.
