What it does
This instrument, AD/CF6/58 Amdt 1, is an airworthiness directive issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 7 September 2007, effective 25 October 2007. It mandates the removal of specified older software versions from the electronic control unit (ECU) of General Electric CF6-80E1 series turbofan engines and prohibits their future use. Mechanically, the directive does four things. First, it requires the removal of ten listed software versions (E.1.D through E.1.N) from the ECU unless already accomplished. Second, it creates a temporary window until 31 January 2008 during which an ECU that already contains a non-prohibited software version may be replaced with an ECU containing one of the older, prohibited software versions listed in Table 1. Third, once a new FAA-approved software version is installed in an ECU, reverting to any of the older software versions listed in Table 1 is permanently prohibited. Fourth, after 31 January 2008, use of any ECU with a software version listed in Table 1 is outright prohibited. The directive applies to five specific engine models: CF6-80E1A1, CF6-80E1A2, CF6-80E1A3, CF6-80E1A4 and CF6-80E1A4/B, which are noted as being installed on Airbus A330 series aeroplanes and possibly other airframes. The background explains that the original issue of this directive (effective 4 August 2005) required removal of software version E.1.M or earlier. This amendment expands the prohibition to include software version E.1.N or earlier and supersedes the original. The stated purpose, drawn from the FAA finding and adopted by CASA, is to address engine flameout events during flight, including incidents where all engines simultaneously experienced a flameout. The FAA believes exposure to ice crystals during flight is associated with these events, though the root cause investigation was not complete at issuance. The compliance dates are layered: Requirement 1 (removal) must be done before 31 January 2008; Requirements 2 and 3 (the temporary replacement allowance and the reversion prohibition) are effective from 25 October 2007; Requirement 4 (prohibition on use of prohibited software) takes effect after 31 January 2008. This creates a staged transition period designed to allow operators time to source and install compliant software while restricting further installation of the older software versions after that date.
