What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) imposes two discrete, document‑driven compliance steps directed at Cessna Model 441 aeroplanes within specified serial number ranges. Mechanically, it does not itself supply parts; it requires operators to check their maintenance records for compliance with a Cessna Service Information Letter (SIL) and, if that earlier action has not been accomplished, to modify the dual battery switch installation in accordance with the SIL Revision 1 (SIL PJ83‑9 Revision 1). The AD sets precise timing for those steps: the records check (Requirement 1) must occur at the next scheduled maintenance but no later than 25 September 2009, while any modification found necessary (Requirement 2) must be completed before further flight (Compliance section). The AD became effective on 25 September 2008 (Compliance: "This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 25 September 2008").
Applicability is limited and clearly specified by serial number. The AD applies to Model 441 aeroplanes in two serial number groups: 441‑0001 through 441‑0172 "with Service Kit SK441‑37 incorporated", and 441‑0173 through 441‑0311 (Applicability). The AD also exempts aeroplanes that incorporate SK441‑37 Revision 1 or later revisions (Note 1: "Aeroplanes incorporating SK441‑37 Revision 1 or later revision are not affected by this Directive").
The AD explicitly treats prior compliance with the United States FAA AD 83‑12‑03 (Amdt 39‑4669) as acceptable for compliance with this Directive (Requirement: "the aircraft’s maintenance records may indicate compliance with United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) AD 83‑12‑03, this is considered acceptable for compliance with this Directive" , Note 2). The background statement identifies the reason for issuing the AD: to detect and correct a possible error in battery switch wiring that may contribute to thermal runaway of nickel‑cadmium batteries (Background). CASA extended the FAA’s original "prior to next flight" timing to a longer window for the records check: "At the next scheduled maintenance but no later than 25 September 2009" (Background and Compliance).
