What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) addressing specific tail rotor driveshaft disc assemblies fitted to Bell Helicopter Textron Canada (BHTC) Model 427 helicopters. It requires operators and maintenance organisations to inspect disc assemblies, P/N 407-340-340-103, for manufacturing date, thickness and indexing in accordance with BHTC Alert Service Bulletin ASB-427-07-17 dated 28 March 2007 (or later approved revisions). Where discs are out of specification they must be removed, and no disc assembly of that P/N may be installed in any helicopter unless it is compliant with that ASB or an approved revision (Requirement 4). The AD applies to helicopters with serial numbers up to 56056 and 58001 through 58002 fitted with that P/N (Applicability). The AD identifies the suspect manufacturing window as 1 November 2005 to 30 November 2006 (Background).
The AD sets discrete compliance windows for each action. The initial verification required by Requirement 1 must be completed within 25 flight hours or 30 days from the effective date of the AD, whichever comes first. If removal is required for thickness (Requirement 2) that removal must occur within 10 flight hours after completion of Requirement 1. If removal is required for incorrect indexing (Requirement 3) it must occur within 300 flight hours or at the next scheduled inspection, whichever comes first, after completion of Requirement 1. The prohibition on installing the P/N into any helicopter unless compliant with the ASB is effective immediately after the AD’s effective date. The AD became effective on 22 November 2007 (Compliance; Effective date).
The AD provides a compliance path: follow ASB-427-07-17 (or later approved revisions), make a log book entry when verification shows no further action is required or if the manufacturing date is outside the specified window, and remove and replace any discs failing the prescribed criteria (Requirement section; Applicability; Compliance). The AD also notes Transport Canada Airworthiness Directive CF-2007-14 dated 24 August 2007 as a referenced instrument (Note).
