Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive mandates urgent safety checks on Bell 206 series helicopters to identify and remove dangerous counterfeit pressure gauges.

What it requires:

Helicopter operators must inspect the pressure gauges fitted to emergency float systems (part number 212-073-905-1) on all Bell 206 and Agusta Bell 206 helicopters
Any counterfeit ("bogus") gauges must be addressed following the manufacturer's safety notice Bell OSN-GEN-89-14
The inspection must occur either at the next scheduled inspection for Maintenance Release (formal certification allowing the aircraft to fly) after 28 February 1990, or before the next time the emergency float reservoir is charged—whichever comes first

Why it matters: A counterfeit pressure gauge exploded at just 2,000 pounds per square inch (well below safe operating limits). Such failures can cause severe injuries to maintenance personnel working on the helicopter's emergency flotation equipment (the system that keeps helicopters afloat during water emergencies).
