What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/B747/298 Amdt 2) prescribes mandatory functional testing, corrective action, and retrofit installations for Boeing Model 747-400 series aeroplanes powered by General Electric CF6-80C2 series engines. The AD requires: repeated functional tests of the centre drive unit (CDU) cone brake on each thrust reverser (Requirement 1); repair or operational limitations if a functional test cannot be completed or a discrepancy is found (Requirement 2); installation and activation of thrust reverser actuator system (TRAS) locks and associated hardware, wiring, software and central maintenance computer (CMC) upgrades where applicable (Requirement 3); functional testing and repair of newly installed TRAS locks (Requirements 4 and 5); and dispatch and deactivation procedures where a TRAS lock-equipped or non-TRAS reverser is installed temporarily (Requirements 6 and 7). The AD identifies the precise service bulletins and alert service bulletins required for testing, repair and installation work, and it references the operator’s approved Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) and the Boeing 747-400 Dispatch Deviations Guide, D6U10151, for permitted dispatch limitations and reactivation timeframes (Requirements 2, 6 and 7).
Compliance intervals are specified in detail. For aeroplanes not modified per Boeing SB 747-78-2151, CDU cone brake testing is required within 650 hours time-in-service (TIS) from the previous test and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 650 hours TIS (Compliance: For Requirement 1.a). For aeroplanes modified per SB 747-78-2151, the test interval is 1,000 hours TIS (Compliance: For Requirement 1.b). TRAS lock functional testing after installation must occur within 1,000 hours TIS after installation, or within 90 flight hours after the effective date of this Directive, whichever is later, and be repeated at least every 1,000 hours TIS (Compliance: For Requirement 4). Where a functional test cannot be successfully completed, repair per the specified ASB or SB is mandatory before further flight, or the aeroplane may be dispatched under the operator’s MMEL provided no more than one thrust reverser is inoperative (Requirement 2; Compliance: For Requirement 2).
