What it does
This instrument is Airworthiness Directive AD/B727/210, titled "Auxiliary Fuel Tank Systems", issued in 6/2008 and published under the authority of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Mechanically, it requires deactivation of auxiliary fuel tank systems installed under specified United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) on Boeing 727 series aeroplanes. The AD is directed to aircraft modified in accordance with the following STCs and STC holders listed in the Applicability table: SA1350NM (DTAA, Inc), ST0158AT (Southeast Aero‑Tec, Inc), SA2033NM (Southeast Aero‑Tec, Inc) and SA1474SO (Southeast Aero‑Tec, Inc). The AD identifies the affected aircraft models as 727‑100, 727‑200 and 727‑200F where those STCs have been installed (see Applicability).
The required action is narrow and procedural: deactivate the auxiliary fuel tank system in accordance with a deactivation procedure approved by a named FAA Aircraft Certification Office (ACO) manager. For aeroplanes modified under STC SA1350NM, the procedure must be approved by the Manager, FAA Wichita ACO; for STCs ST0158AT, SA2033NM and SA1474SO, approval must be by the Manager, FAA Atlanta ACO (see Requirement, paragraphs a and b). Any auxiliary fuel tank components remaining after deactivation must be secured and must not affect the continued operational safety and airworthiness of the aeroplane. The AD also stipulates that deactivation may not result in the need for additional Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA).
The directive sets a compliance deadline and an effective date. It becomes effective on 5 June 2008 and requires compliance no later than 12 December 2008 (see Compliance). The Background section records that the AD follows fuel tank system reviews by the manufacturer and states the safety objective as prevention of ignition sources inside fuel tanks that, with flammable vapours, could cause fuel tank explosions and consequent loss of the aeroplane. The AD references FAA AD 2008‑07‑07 Amdt 39‑15448 and FAA AD 2008‑07‑09 Amdt 39‑15450 (Note 2) and supplies contacts at the STC holders for technical information (Note 1). The document is signed by James Coyne, Delegate of CASA, dated 21 April 2008.
