What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), titled AD/AT 800/12 Rudder-Aileron Interconnect Cable Shield, prescribes immediate and short-term actions for specific Airtractor AT-802 and AT-802A aeroplanes to prevent jamming of the rudder-aileron interconnect cable system. The directive requires two sequential measures. First, until a physical modification is installed, the operator must secure any items stowed in the baggage compartment “using tie down straps and/or a cargo net” (Requirement 1). Second, by a stated final deadline, the operator must install an approved cable shield kit in accordance with Snow Engineering Co., Service Letter #274 Revision A, dated 6 April 2009 (Requirement 2). The AD sets a two-stage compliance schedule: the interim securing measure is required “before each flight after 1 October 2009; until Requirement 2 is accomplished,” while installation of the applicable kit must be completed “no later than 31 December 2009” (Compliance). The document also records that “installation of the applicable cable shield kit SL#274 or SL#274-2 terminates Requirement 1 of this Directive” (Requirement).
The directive is limited in scope by aircraft model and serial number. It applies to “Models AT-802 and AT-802A aircraft, serial numbers 802/802A-001 through 802/802A-0319” (Applicability). The AD was issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), signed by the Delegate, and “becomes effective on 1 October 2009” (Compliance; signature block). The Background states the safety rationale: the FAA received a report of “the rudder pedal cable becoming jammed in flight,” and the requirements are “intended to prevent jamming of the rudder-aileron interconnect cables by unsecured items in the baggage compartment,” which could “result in failure of the rudder-aileron interconnect cable system” and “lead to loss of control” (Background). The document cross-references FAA AD 2009-18-04 Amdt 39-16000 (Requirement, Note).
