What it does
This airworthiness directive (AD), titled AD/AT-6/2 Amdt 1 and issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegate David Villiers on 18 May 2009, mandates inspection and corrective work on the horizontal stabiliser rear spar connector fittings for certain Rockwell (N American) and Autair (Noorduyn) AT-6, BC-1A, SNJ, T-6G, Harvard and AT-16 series aeroplanes. The directive applies to a specific subset of those aircraft: Model Harvard 2 and Harvard 4 aircraft and Model AT-6D (SNJ-5), AT-6F (SNJ-6), SNJ-7 and T-6G aircraft, but only if they are equipped with the single-piece design horizontal stabiliser rear spar connector fittings, identified as part number 7721021 (four fittings per spar). The AD explicitly excludes aircraft fitted with two-piece design connector fittings, part numbers 77210213 and 77210214 (eight fittings per spar) from its applicability.
Mechanically, the AD requires removal of the fuselage-to-vertical stabiliser fairing assembly and the rear fairing assemblies at the horizontal stabiliser; removal of the 1/4-inch bolts that attach the upper and lower spar connection fittings (part number 7721021); removal of the four connection fittings from the spar and removal of paint from the fittings; dye-penetrant inspection of the fittings for cracks; replacement of any cracked fittings; repainting of fittings that pass inspection; measurement of the fit between the connection fittings and the spar with a feeler gauge; fabrication and installation of aluminium shims where gaps exceed 0.010 inches (shims specified at 3 1/8-inch x 15/16-inch and of necessary thickness, drilled to match fitting holes); removal of drilling chips; and reinstallation of bolts and other removed parts in accordance with the aircraft maintenance manual. The AD requires completion of these works “unless previously accomplished, before 31 July 2009.” The amendment itself became effective on 2 July 2009.
