What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) that requires physical modification of the hat-rack electrical connectors in the door 2 area of specified Airbus A330 model aeroplanes. The AD mandates modification of both left-hand and right-hand hat-rack connectors in accordance with Airbus Service Bulletin A330-92-3070 Revision 01 dated 12 January 2009, or any later revision that has been approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Where an aeroplane was already modified before the AD’s effective date using the original issue of the same Service Bulletin, the AD requires the additional work contained in Revision 01 (or later EASA-approved revisions) to be carried out.
Applicability is explicitly limited to A330-201, -202, -203, -223, -243, -301, -302, -303, -321, -322, -323, -341, -342 and -343 model aeroplanes, all manufacturer serial numbers on which Airbus modification 48825 was embodied during production, except those on which Airbus modification 57409 was embodied during production (see Applicability). The AD becomes effective on 4 June 2009 and requires compliance with the modification within 24 months after that effective date (see Compliance).
The textual rationale supplied with the AD identifies a specific hazard: in some monument installations in the door 2 area the stowed wire harness that includes oxygen mask activation wiring can be positioned too close to the monument, creating a risk of short circuit of oxygen-dedicated wires. The AD frames the consequence as the potential failure of a large number of passenger oxygen masks to supply oxygen during an emergency, with a risk of personal injuries (see Background). The AD also expressly refers to EASA AD 2009-0077 (Note).
