Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does

This instrument sets the annual fishing season for the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery, which operates in Commonwealth waters off Western Australia.

Key details

Fishing season dates: The season runs from 1 February to 31 January of the following year (a rolling 12-month period).
Who made this: The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), the government body responsible for managing Commonwealth fisheries.
Who it affects: Commercial fishers holding licences (statutory fishing rights) to catch tuna and billfish species—such as swordfish, striped marlin, and yellowfin tuna—in this fishery.

Why it matters

This determination creates a predictable annual cycle for the fishing industry, ensuring all operators know exactly when they can legally start and must stop fishing. It helps AFMA manage fish stocks sustainably by controlling when fishing effort occurs, and prevents fishing outside the designated season (which would be illegal).
