Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This declaration gives Australian Defence Force members who served on Operation Riverbank in Iraq access to special home loan benefits. Under the Defence Force (Home Loans Assistance) Act 1990, service classified as warlike service makes members eligible for concessional home loans and housing assistance (similar to benefits for veterans). This instrument declares that anyone who served in Iraq as part of Operation Riverbank is deemed to have performed warlike service. The declaration applies retrospectively from 21 July 2008, meaning it covers members who were already deployed when the declaration was signed in June 2009.
