Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This declaration gives home loan benefits to Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served on Operation Northern Watch in Iraq.

What it does Under the Defence Force (Home Loans Assistance) Act 1990, service must be classified as "warlike" for members to access special home loan subsidies and assistance (such as interest rate relief). This instrument declares that service on Operation Northern Watch officially counts as warlike service.

Who it covers

ADF members who were officially allotted (assigned) to Operation Northern Watch
Who served in Iraq
Between 1 January 1997 and 12 January 2003

Why this matters This retrospective declaration (made in 2007) ensures personnel who enforced the no-fly zone over northern Iraq during this six-year period can access the same home loan assistance benefits as those who served in declared wars or combat operations.
