Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This declaration gives Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served on Operation Catalyst access to special home loan assistance by officially classifying that service as "warlike service" under the Defence Force (Home Loans Assistance) Act 1990.

Who it covers:

ADF members who were officially assigned (allotted) to Operation Catalyst
Who served between 16 July 2003 and 31 July 2009
In the specified area covering Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, northern Saudi Arabia (north of 23°N), the Persian Gulf, and the Strait of Hormuz (including the airspace above these areas)

Why it matters: Being classified as "warlike service" unlocks better home loan benefits for eligible defence personnel and veterans than non-warlike or peacetime service. This declaration replaces an earlier 2003 declaration to confirm the final end date of the operation.
