Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This instrument classifies Australian military participation in Operation OKRA (the ADF's contribution to the Iraq crisis) as "warlike service" — a specific legal category for active combat or combat-like operations.

Who it affects: Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Iraq (including its land, territorial waters, and airspace) on or after 9 August 2014.

Why it matters: The "warlike service" label determines eligibility and rates for veterans' benefits under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986. It typically qualifies veterans for higher disability compensation and distinct pension rules compared to peacekeeping or peacetime service.

Key details: The determination covers the geographic area of Iraq and applies to service rendered from 9 August 2014 onwards.
