Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This law officially declares that military service in "Operation Highroad" counts as warlike service under veterans' law.

Who it affects: Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Afghanistan as part of Australia's contribution to NATO's Resolute Support Mission starting from 1 January 2015.

Why it matters: When service is classified as "warlike service," veterans gain access to specific benefits, compensation, and repatriation health care under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986. This determination ensures troops involved in this post-combat training and advisory mission receive the same entitlements as those involved in active combat operations.

The details:

Operation: Highroad (supporting NATO's Resolute Support Mission)
Where: Afghanistan and the airspace above it (superjacent airspace)
When: On and after 1 January 2015
